The art of injection

To my physician colleagues:

Treatment with injections is an area that evokes strong feelings in both the receiver and the therapist. It's a great opportunity to confront your own fear and to develop yourself both as a therapist and as a human being. Injection therapy is much more than anatomy and technique. Therefor I use the term art.
To develop as a skilled practitioner you have to practice and develop more sides of yourself.

The injection itself, that is, from the moment the tip of the needle penetrates the skin to the point when it is outside the body again, is a big challenge in being emotionally and physically present. It is a strong test of complete presence and total focus wrapped in deep conciousness and trust in the method of treatment as well as empathy for the patient.

During the injection, unnecessary talk should be avoided. Comments at this point such as "how do you feel" or "does it hurt" can be interpreted as insecurity and fear.
The best we can do in every situation is to be genuine. This means standing behind our qualifications and our experience. Without hiding anything. The majority of patients get a calm feeling from the doctor's honest and serious intention.

Certain cases are more difficult than most and we might even miss the objective. At times such as these I usually stop the injection, palpate again and start from the beginning. At the same time, I inform the patient openly and honestly. This creates confidence! It is never defensible to "dump the cargo" without reaching the goal for the entire therapeutic measure.

Use breathing! Before you inject, ask the patient to take a few deep breaths and to relax. Do the same yourself! The patient will be calmer and you will become more focused.
Be prepared to meet the patient's emotional reactions after the injection. Listen and show empathy. Keep your focus and be conscious.
In other words - be professional!!

Good luck!
